Used car safety highlighted with new guide

Many new vehicles offer significant safety features that aim to protect motorists in the event of a car accident.

However, for many of us, the prospect of a new car is beyond our means and we are more likely to consider a used car to get us around the city. The risk, though, is that some older vehicles are unsafe or don’t perform well during an incident.

To combat this, the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Roads Ray Williams has announced the release of the Used Car Safety Guide. The downloadable guide aims to provide prospective buyers with the information required to make an informed decision about second-hand vehicles.

In many cases, Mr Williams said that safety isn’t compromised by price and there are many good quality vehicles for cheaper rates.

“Being a father, I know how daunting it is selecting a young driver’s first car. Often on a shoe string budget, it comes down to getting the right balance between safety and affordability,” he said.

“This Guide allows drivers to make the most informed decision to ensure they are getting behind the wheel of something safe.”

The Used Car Safety Guide gives each vehicle a safety star rating from one to five, similar to the insight provided by ANCAP. It also features a wide-range of passenger vehicle types including people movers, vans, utes and SUVs.

Mr Williams said the guide goes beyond what consumers can find on the internet.

“An important feature in the guide is the “Safe Pick” rating which is only given to cars that provide the highest level of safety to their occupants, are fitted with Electronic Stability Control and pose the lowest risk to other road users,” he explained.

“The guide also includes useful advice like myths about vehicle safety and comprehensive information about car features that can help you avoid a crash.”
