The Princes Motorway in Wollongong has been at the centre of major news these past weeks due to a devastating motor vehicle incident that has left two innocent people dead and others injured.
Events of the motor vehicle accident
On June 28, 2019, at around 2:00 p.m, a vehicle traveling south collided with a truck attached to a dog trailer, near Mt Keira Road overpass. As a result of the initial collision, four cars traveling behind the vehicle were drawn into the crash. Two of the cars burst into flames, and while the driver of one managed to free himself before the fire, the driver and passenger of the other vehicle were trapped and died at the scene.
What happened following the incident?
While emergency services tended to the incident and treated injured parties, it’s believed police took several drivers to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. While results didn’t show anything suspicious, after further investigations, a 65 year-old male, who was the driver of the motor vehicle that initially collided with the truck, was charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and one count of negligent driving occasioning death.
Following the motor vehicle incident, NSW Police are still trying to decipher the cause of the crash and are asking for any witnesses to come forward with evidence. They have even asked people driving along the Princes Motorway at the time of the crash to check dashcam footage to help piece together the case.
