Safety upgrades on a significant Hunter Valley link has begun today (July 14), and according to a local MP the changes are much needed.
Work on Denman Road at Muswellbrook is expected to be completed by early 2015 and should improve safety along this vital link road. North-west of Newcastle, Denman Road connects Muswellbrook to the Golden Highway that is the gateway to the wider Hunter Valley region.
Any infrastructure project that can improve safety is welcomed in NSW, where 180 people have already lost their lives on state roads this year. This is a 5 per cent increase over the number of fatalities recorded at this time in 2013.
The NSW government has funded $2.2 million into the 2.1km stretch of road west of the Edderton Road intersection. The safety work completed here will complement the 1.3km section recently upgraded.
George Souris, member for Upper Hunter, described what the project will entail.
“The project includes shoulder widening, road rehabilitation, property access and drainage improvements,” he said.
“Wider shoulders and safety barriers are expected to provide a safer road for motorists while upgraded drainage will reduce future maintenance costs.”
Motorists are expected to experience short delays during their journey onto the Golden Highway from the north. There will be traffic control in place during construction hours so drivers are reminded to be cautious through the area.
“This project is part of the NSW government’s commitment to providing safe and reliable road infrastructure to the community and businesses of the Hunter region,” Mr Souris explained.
Denman Road has been the location of many serious car accidents in recent years. In one incident last July, a two-car accident occurred at the intersection with the Golden Highway.
A man in his 30s suffered different injuries, while another man in his 20s received a serious leg injury. Both men were flown to hospital by the Hunter Westpac rescue helicopter.
