Recalled ceiling hoist could injure

Date: Sep 12, 2016

Samsung has just recalled all of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones worldwide. The reason for such drastic actions is the increasing risk of fire, with the smartphones battery the culprit. The recall is a major scandal in Australia, with the Brisbane Times reporting that both telecast and retailers have pulled the product from their shelves.

Product malfunctions can be a major problem for consumers, leading to drastic recalls. However, this can be compounded if the faulty good is medical equipment. In many cases, this can lead to medical malpractice claims.

Faulty hoist can injure, authorities say

In consultation with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australian company Patient Handling is completing a recall of Molift Air ceiling hoists that were distributed between May 2013 and January 2016. The products are being recalled for repair, adjustment and modification to ensure safety.

The Molift Air is a ceiling hoist that can support disabled patients when sitting as well as enable horizontal transfers. It also can be used to help with standing and walking training. It’s used both in health facilities and in-home care.

The reason for the recall is an issue with a bolt that is used in the suspension coupling. The bolt can become loose, leading to the possibility of injury to the patient. While there has been no identified incidents, the risk of harm is too high if the bolt becomes loose from its housing.

Due to the implementation and installation of the product, Patient Handling or its appointed regional distributors will upgrade the affected hoist in the home or at the premises. The upgrade will come in the from of a safety ring that will prevent the bolt from becoming loose.
