You never know when you may need to enlist the help of a lawyer. From being involved in a car accident to suffering from harassment in the workplace, there are many reasons why you could need to find a solicitor.
However, finding the right lawyer is not always as simple as it seems. With so many firms to choose from in NSW it can be a challenge to narrow the list down.
Fortunately the Law Society of NSW is looking to make this process easier for people seeking legal advice.
The society has launched a new smartphone app called ‘Find A Lawyer’, which allows people to search for solicitors across the state.
“With this app, members of the public have access to an up-to-date directory of all NSW practices, solicitors and mediators,” Law Society of NSW president Justin Dowd said in a statement.
“The searchable database is a ‘one stop shop’ with details on all solicitors who hold a certificate to practice in NSW.”
Currently the app is only available for iPhone and Android capable devices. It can be downloaded on the iTunes or Google Play stores.
It is hoped that people will make the most of this new service while they are out and about.
“Whether you are looking for a solicitor [that] specialises in conveyancing matters, or need help with making a will, the app will help you find a lawyer, while you are on the movie,” Mr Dowd said.
In light of this application, here are some other tips for finding a great lawyer that will suit your needs.
There are so many different areas of law, making it important that you find an expert who can help you with your unique case.
For example, if you need assistance in buying or selling a property, then you would want to find a lawyer who is skilled in this area of expertise.
However if you are looking to seek car accident compensation then a property lawyer may not be your best bet – you need to find someone who is experienced in personal injury law.
Understand the fees
When seeking legal advice, sometimes the matter can seem so urgent that you do not worry about the fees – thinking that any service will be worth the price.
However, it is a good idea to understand the cost of legal assistance before you commit to a lawyer. While most solicitors operate with integrity some may give you a rough deal.
Look for firms that offer transparent pricing plans and that take your case on a ‘no win no fee‘ basis, meaning that you will only have to pay if your claim is successful.
