In the 12 months to date (May 13, 2019), 147 people have lost their lives on NSW roads, according to Transport NSW. Unfortunately, a recent motor vehicle incident has left one more family suffering the loss of a loved one in the Sydney area.
Background of the motor vehicle incident
At around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday May 9, 2019, a tradesman was killed when another motorist caused a multi-vehicle pile up as a result of reckless driving. The 53-year-old offender is alleged to have been driving along the M4 when he applied harsh and unnecessary braking, causing him to swerve across three lanes of traffic, leading to a pile up of at least eight cars and a truck.
The victim, a 36-year-old Wentworthville man, reported to be an Irish national and tradesman on his way to work, was killed when his utility vehicle was struck by the offender, forcing him under the cabin of the truck.
What happened following the incident?
A further nine people involved in the incident were taken to hospital for treatment. The offender reportedly left the scene.
On the same day, police appealed for information regarding the driver of the offending vehicle. The man was then arrested on Friday night and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, failure to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct and a backup charge of negligent driving occasioning death.
In a statement, the offender's lawyer claimed the man was trying to get himself off the road and out of the way of other drivers after discovering issues with his truck.
"The accused, I'm told, had some … mechanical problems and his intention was to change lanes to the left and unfortunately (this) has resulted in a pile up."
However, the accused was denied bail by the Magistrate Court on Saturday May 11, 2019, with judges claiming that if the serious charges are confirmed, they will likely lead to a custodial penalty.
