John Holland probe over workers exposure to asbestos

Date: Aug 12, 2016

Australian building giant John Holland is under fire for its treatment of workers who were exposed to asbestos while on site at Perth’s new children’s hospital. The event has sparked debate over the effective handling of exposure and the mitigation of negative consequences, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.

The incident occurred while workers were drilling into a roof panel, which resulted in workers being showered by a powdery substance. After testing, it turned out the dust was in fact white asbestos called chrysotile.

Asbestos is a dangerous substance and can cause asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases. In fact, the World Health Organisation reported that over 100,000 people die every year from diseases relating to chrysotile and other forms of asbestos.

Angry workers not happy with response

For the workers that were exposed, John Holland offered a number of support services, such as:

  • Information sessions with an industrial hygienist
  • Vehicle testing
  • Tool cleaning
  • Baseline health test

However, many of the workers are unhappy with the response. One told ABC Radio that he travelled home covered in the dust and was worried about the impact it might have on his two-year-old daughter, reported the Guardian.

“We were told we needed to get X-rays and get on a register, but nobody has confirmed it and the boys were mostly angry because we thought we’d have people down there making sure we’re all right,” he told ABC radio.

For many, the support services were not enough and failed to mitigate the fears of the workers exposed. Luckily, those who have encountered asbestos while at work have a number of options available to them.

Why should you seek asbestos lawyers?

Asbestos is nothing to shrug at. While Australia has a “she’ll be right” attitude, the impact of asbestos on a person’s health cannot be understated.

Not only can it lead to cancer, in most cases, the symptoms are not felt until years after exposure. Once asbestos fibres enter your system, due to their size, there is very little that can be done. As such, you need to be sure you have a financial settlement that reflects the pain and anguish you could be enduring.
