Is your car road safe?

With the Christmas holidays just around the corner, there has never been a better time to take your car into the mechanic’s for a seasonal check-up.

Chances are many of you are planning on hitting the road this Christmas, so it is important that your car is road safe!

Little things such as ensuring that your tyres have enough air and your oil is topped up can make your travels go that much smoother.

Taking your car for a check-up is also great for peace of mind – you can roll out of the driveway feeling confident as opposed to concerned about the long trip ahead.

Some of you may even want to consider investing in a new car as an early Christmas present for yourself.

The NRMA and the NSW Centre for Road Safety announced yesterday (December 10) that many new cars have received 5-star ANCAP ratings just in time for Christmas!

These vehicles include the Kia Sorento, Infiniti FX, Hyundai Sante Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and Citroen DS4.

NRMA motoring & services vehicle safety expert Jack Haley said that these new ratings mark the finish of a successful year.

“It’s been a year of good news for new car buyers with more than 80 per cent (39 out of 48) vehicles rates achieving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating,” Mr Haley said in a statement.

“We are pleased that just one vehicle scored 3-stars while no 1- or 2-star rated vehicles were tested in 2012.”

It is hoped that this is the start of more good things to come, as vehicle manufacturers continuously strive to design safer models.

“Vehicle manufacturers should be congratulated for striving to achieve to the high standards that consumers, motoring organisations and governments expect in vehicle safety,” Mr Haley said.

Meanwhile NSW Centre for Road Safety general manager Marg Prendergast said that safety should be the theme for everyone this Christmas.

“Safety should be the first consideration whenever we hit the road – particularly during the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period when many holidaymakers are driving on unfamiliar roads,” Ms Prendergast asserted.

This advice is something that everyone should take on board, with the Christmas period well-known to be one of many fatal car accidents.

Travellers on the road may want to remember that if they are the victim of an accident, they can speak to lawyers in Sydney and make a claim for compensation.
