The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has urged parents to stop using certain cots and strollers supplied by Online Dealz.
According to the ACCC, tests have shown there are a number of health and safety risks associated with the products that could lead to serious injury and even death.
Companies that release faulty or dangerous goods can face product liability claims from injured parties, although the ACCC did not reveal whether or not any incidents had already occurred.
Three products were highlighted as failing to meet mandatory safety standards:
Product liability warning
ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said anyone who has purchased one of these products should stop using them “immediately”.
“The tests commissioned by the ACCC indicate that these baby cots and stroller posed various entrapment hazards, which could result in a child’s head or limb becoming stuck causing serious injuries such as fractures, as well as strangulation or suffocation,” he explained.
“The tests also indicate that the products do not comply with labelling requirements, which provide information to consumers about the correct way to use the products.”
Ms Court said the cots do not contain any details on the appropriate mattress size. Buying an oversized mattress could cause suffocation or increase the chances of a fall from the crib, she added.
The ACCC has filed legal proceedings against Online Dealz, including the company’s director and sole shareholder, Janet Lucas. The organisation alleges that Ms Lucas and her company contravened the Australian Consumer Law and misled customers regarding the safety of the products.
