How many women have accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct?

Published 05 Jan 2018

In early October, the New York Times published allegations from several women that Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein had sexually harassed them.

Since then, the story has gained significant momentum, with dozens more alleged victims coming forward to say the 65-year-old was guilty of sexual misconduct, with incidents ranging from harassment to rape.

The scandal encouraged many other men and women to come forward about their own experiences with sexual impropriety within the film and comedy industries. Other stars, such as actor Kevin Spacey and comedian Louis CK, have also faced allegations of misconduct.

Weinstein accusers continue to speak out

How many women have come forward against Weinstein so far? Media outlets report at least 75, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Kate Beckinsale among his high-profile accusers.

Actresses Asia Argento, Lysette Anthony and Rose McGowan all claim Weinstein raped them. A number of women who wished to remain anonymous have also accused the producer of rape.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex, but has issued several statements since the story broke.

"I came of age in the '60s and '70s, when all the rules about behaviour and workplaces were different. That was the culture then," he said shortly after the New York Times feature.

"I appreciate the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologise for it. Though I'm trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go. That is my commitment."

Despite these comments, Weinstein has challenged a number of the accusations made against him. This includes Salma Hayek's recent claims in a New York Times article that he repeatedly pursued her for sex, threatened to kill her and forced her to perform a full frontal nudity scene in the Oscar-winning film Frida against her will.

"All of the sexual allegations as portrayed by Salma are not accurate and others who witnessed the events have a different account of what transpired," a Weinstein spokesperson said.

Lawsuits on the horizon for Weinstein

Earlier this month, six women filed a lawsuit against the movie mogul, which could turn into a class-action case representing dozens of women. Weinstein, Miramax and the Weinstein Company were all named in the suit.

The plaintiffs argue that efforts to cover-up the producer's misconduct amounted to racketeering. Weinstein could face a number of civil claims for his alleged actions, which may result in considerable compensation payments.
