An accident in Marrickville has highlighted the need for drivers to be aware of pedestrian safety as they navigate Sydney's streets.
Early yesterday morning (May 22) - at approximately 00:50 - a car-pedestrian crash occurred on Sydenham Road, not far from the Northcote Street intersection, according to a New South Wales official police report.
The detectives understand that a Toyota Hi-ace van hit an 18-year-old woman as she crossed the road but are asking for anyone to step forward if they can provide more information.
Driving the van was a 74-year-old male, who received a blood and urine testing after the incident occurred.
The woman is currently receiving treatment at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is believed to have serious internal injuries and will need to have surgery.
This is not the only pedestrian crash that has happened on the streets of Sydney over the last few months.
On Wednesday May 16 a 66-year-old man was crossing the road at Toomevara Street in Kogarah when he was hit by a Subaru sedan at 08:30.
Despite efforts from the 30-year-old driver - who spent time giving him first-aid at the scene - the man passed away at St George Hospital.
These two incidents come after two children were hit by cars in late April and early May.
A four-year-old girl was hit by a Land Rover Discovery in Pyrmont on April 24 at the intersection of Harris and Quarry Streets. Just over a week later a six-year-old boy was hit outside Caringbah primary school.
These accidents emphasise the need for drivers to not only watch out for potential hazards from other vehicles, but from the sidewalks as well.
Taking care to slow down and pay extra attention in populated central areas, near intersections and in school zones may also help drivers avoid becoming involved in these critical collisions.
Pedestrians should also use marked crossings when available and be careful when attempting to cross busy roads.
