The Northern Beaches district of Sydney has been the scene of a fatal car accident which claimed the life of an elderly man and saw two young victims taken to hospital.
Police say that at 10:40 on May 12 an orange Holden Commodore was travelling in a westerly direction along Warringah Road when it came to an intersection with Alfred Street in the suburb of Narraweena near Dee Why.
The car began to turn right into Alfred Street at the lights across the dual carriageway when a second vehicle - a green Hyundai Lantra - which was travelling east on Warringah Road entered the intersection.
According to reports, the Hyundai collided with the Commodore near the right passenger door, moving it partly off the roadway and into a tree growing on the curb nearby.
The driver and sole occupant of the green vehicle - a 79-year-old man - suffered a range of injuries from the two impacts and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) for treatment.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the paramedics and doctors involved, the elderly man died sometime after he arrived at the facility.
The driver of the Commodore - a 26-year-old man - was also taken to the nearby hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
Fortunately the only other occupant of the orange car - a 21-year-old woman - only suffered minor injuries and while she was transferred to RNSH for treatment she was later released from care.
Emergency services attended the scene shortly after the accident was reported, with police, paramedics and NSW Fire and Rescue services all on hand to provide assistance.
Officers from the Northern Beaches local area command were able to put diversions in place around the site to allow personnel to proceed with their tasks unimpeded by public traffic.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit were also called out to examine the site of the crash in order to determine if any contributing factors were in play.
At this time no formal word has been given on whom - if anyone - was thought to be responsible in this crash and there has been little information made public regarding the turn of the traffic lights at the intersection concerned.
Factors like this can be important when filing for car accident compensation as they can determine the availability and amounts that may be payable to the victims.
